Downing’s latest project is a deeply personal exploration of love, freedom, and artistry.
This six-song EP masterfully blends smooth R&B, soul, and jazz, delivering a collection of heartfelt performances that showcase his iconic baritone voice and signature style.
The journey begins with the original track, “The Power of Love,” a collaboration with guitarist Randy Bowland. This sweet and tender ballad is a “feel-good” anthem, weaving lush harmonies and soothing melodies to remind us of the strength love holds to uplift and heal.
Downing’s love for honoring musical greats shines through in “Rashida,” a poignant tribute to Jon Lucien’s 1973 classic. With Marion Meadows on saxophone, this rendition beautifully captures the elegance and passion of the original while adding Downing’s unique vocal depth.
The jazz standard “In the Wee Small Hours (of the Morning)” takes listeners to a smoky lounge, with Tim Cunningham’s saxophone evoking the spirit of John Coltrane. This sultry interpretation pays homage to the timeless influence of Johnny Hartman, showcasing Downing’s impeccable phrasing and emotional nuance.
Drawing inspiration from the 1995 supergroup Urban Knights, Downing reimagines “Forever More” with a heartfelt blend of smooth grooves and soulful vocals. Featuring his bandmate Mike Logan, Sr., and harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy, this track captures the pain of regret and the hope for redemption in love.
The emotional depth continues with “Sugar on the Floor,” Downing’s tender take on Kiki Dee’s mid-70s classic. This rendition radiates vulnerability and soul, proving once again his ability to interpret songs with raw, heartfelt emotion.
Finally, Luscious takes an introspective turn with “Mama Used to Say,” a reimagining of Junior’s 1980s dance anthem. Teaming up with Marcus Johnson, Downing slows the tempo to create a reflective groove that honors the wisdom and love of mothers, infusing the track with poignant storytelling and deep gratitude.
Luscious represents Will Downing’s artistic liberation, as he focuses on creating music that resonates deeply with his soul. “This project is about creating music that I truly feel. Every song on this album reflects something meaningful to me, and I hope listeners will feel that love and passion.”
