Recent discussions have revealed that Harriet Tubman is a prominent candidate to replace Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill. If Tubman were to be placed on the $20 bill however, she wouldn’t be the first black person to appear on American currency. Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver appeared on the silver half dollar set that was issued from 1951-1954. Booker T. Washington a former slave that among his many accomplishments founded Tuskegee University in 1881. Carver, also a former slave, was an inventor, botanist and educator at Tuskegee University and developed many methods, crops and aids for farmers. Both of these men are American heroes and were immortalized on the silver half dollar.
