January 31st 1970 would see basketball legend and Naismith Hall of Famer “Pistol” Pete Maravich break the NCAA scoring record set by another basketball legend and Naismith Hall of Famer, “The Big O” Oscar Robertson. Maravich would eclipse the mark set by Robertson by scoring 53 points against SEC foe Ole Miss.
Pistol Pete would end his illustrious college career for Louisiana State University as a three-time consensus first team All-American, a three time SEC Player of the Year and he led the NCAA in scoring each of his three years of playing for LSU. Pete was also the National College Player Of The Year in 1970.
Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game for his college career, a career that was only three years due to the fact that freshman weren’t allowed to play on the varsity team.
University of Iowa senior Caitlin Clark surpassed Pete Maravich’s scoring mark of 3,667 points on March 3, 2024 by scoring 35 points in a victory over Ohio State. Clark has won many accolades during her career as a Hawkeye. Clark has been a three time All-American (two times she was named unanimous first team All-American) and a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year.
She swept the various player of the year awards at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season as she won the AP Player of the Year, Honda Sports Award, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith College Player of the Year, USBWA National Player of the Year, Wade Trophy and the James E. Sullivan Award.

The all time college basketball and women’s basketball collegiate scoring record is held by Pearl Moore, whom played basketball at Francis Marion University.
During her career at Francis Marion averaged 30.6 points per game. She scored 4,061 points during her college career in addition to being named a four time All-American. Moore played professionally in the Women’s Professional Basketball League. She was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
