The Dr. Richard Barnett Foundation Celebrates Legacy And Scholars At 4th Annual Golf Classic

By David Jordan Jr

The Dr. Richard Barnett Foundation hosted its annual golf classic at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, New York to raise funds for their scholarship program and to continue the everlasting legacy of the late Dr. Richard “Dick” Barnett. Dr. Barnett died on April 27, 2025 at the age of 88 years old, having lived a life that brought about change, impact and opportunity not only for himself, but for the next generation. A student of life, Dr. Barnett left a legacy with the Dr. Richard Barnett Foundation, which he co-founded with Steve Baumley to give young scholars the opportunity to pursue their dreams and attain their education at the highest level.

There were several former New York professional sports legends in attendance, including Cazzie Russell, the number one pick in the 1966 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks and the roommate of Dr. Barnett for five NBA seasons. The Michael Schwartz Community Impact Award 2025 was awarded to Ed Sirlin. Ed is the Managing Group Director and Executive Vice President at Customers Bank and has been an avid supporter of DRBF. Four scholars were awarded scholarships, as they each were given a $7,500 check as a reward to their excellence in the classroom and in the community. Steve Baumley, executive director of DRBF spoke about the vision for the scholars. ‘The vision all along was to be able to give kids scholarships and help them realize their dreams, and this is just the start of it. So we’re going to keep going, and we couldn’t do it without all of our supporters, so thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us and the kids in our program; it means more than you know.”
