Singer Tonya Mitchell | Her Words
By David Jordan Jr
The essence of a musician can be found in the simplistic love which they have for their craft. Talent, passion, and a love for creating and sharing melodies with the world can create a dynamic that formulates a foundation that solidifies a legacy. Singer Tonya Mitchell is a woman who has fully encompassed each aspect of her artistry to create a musical legacy that stands, while continuing to give to her fanbase.
Originally from Huron, Tennessee, Tonya’s early musical development was almost inevitable, as the city had a strong musical presence, and she displayed those talents early in life at various talent shows. The talent would elevate her to a new level in 1998 as an artist, as she was discovered by Bill Bomar, the grandfather of Justin Timberlake, when she performed at a country music regional benefit.
The opportunity would lead to her being signed to Timberlake’s management company, JustinTime Entertainment. As the new millennium was then starting, Tonya released her debut single, “Broken Promises,” under Motown/Universal Records. The song was produced by Dino Esposito (Dino, 24/7, 1989) and peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 chart, gaining heavy rotation on Pop/R&B radio stations. As a performer, she toured with NSYNC on their “Pop Odyssey” stadium tour, culminating with a performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her full-length album “I Represent” was released in April 2001.
Throughout her career, Tonya has performed with other groundbreaking musicians such as Boyz II Men, Nelly, Jessica Simpson, Tyrese, and DREAM.
Recently, Tonya talked to ESHE about her career, the impact of the transition of music to the digital space in the early 2000s, and her current and upcoming projects.
