Actor Layne Harper: All Dimensions

By David Jordan Jr

Artists in the world are individuals that have a true understanding of self-expression through oration, the sharing of personal experiences through writing and acting, and by allowing an instrument to talk through a pen or an instrument. Actor Layne Harper is a man who has shared his passion for storytelling through his work as an actor and as a musician. Harper was recently awarded the Hattie McDaniels “Rising Star” Award for his impact in film and television. He recently spoke with ESHE about his career in the arts and the importance of artists in the world.

David Jordan Jr:  As a person that has been involved in the arts in both music and drama, what has been a consistent point of focus for you as a performer?

Layne Harper: As a performer who has been involved in both music and drama, my consistent focus has always been authenticity and connection. Whether I’ m expressing a character on screen or conveying emotion through my music, I strive to tell stories that resonate and feel genuine. My goal is to create moments that not only entertain but also touch people on a deeper level, bringing truth and emotional depth to everything I do.

David Jordan Jr:  Having lived in different cities and countries across the world, how has the impact of being encapsulated in different cultures impacted your acting career?

Layne Harper: Living in different cities and countries has had a profound impact on my acting career. Experiencing diverse cultures has given me a broader perspective on human behavior, emotions, and relationships, which I bring to every role I play. It has taught me adaptability, empathy, and the ability to connect with characters from all walks of life, making my performances more nuanced and authentic.

David Jordan Jr:  In one of your recent roles, you portrayed Sean Combs in the Hulu release “Diddy On Trial.” What did you learn about yourself as an actor in portraying somebody involved in a high profile case as it was happening in real time? How was the experience?

Layne Harper: Portraying Sean Combs in Diddy On Trial was an incredible experience. Growing up, all I listened to in my teenage years was Wu-Tang Clan, Ruff Ryders, and Bad Boy, so stepping into that world felt really personal. Playing someone at the center of a high-profile case, as it was happening, taught me the importance of precision and responsibility as an actor. I had to balance staying true to the facts while bringing humanity and depth to the role. It also reinforced my ability to adapt quickly and stay fully present in the moment, which is essential when capturing real-life events as they unfold.

David Jordan Jr:  Why are the arts important to the world?

Layne Harper: As an artist, the word itself has “art” in it and that is no coincidence. We are given the responsibility to show the world our own canvas, whether through music, film, or performance. The arts give people a way to connect, feel, and understand each other. Every story we tell, every emotion we share, has the power to inspire, heal, and bring people together.

David Jordan Jr:  Your support group. Your family, wife and kids have been there with you through this entire journey. Can you speak about how important their love and support has been to you throughout this journey?

Layne Harper: My wife and kids are the reason I am so determined to succeed. The sacrifices it takes, the patience of my wife when I have to step away for days, weeks, or even months to film, and yet she still manages to be in my corner, is a truly surreal feeling. God has truly blessed me with my family. Their love and support are everything I could ever ask for, and they give me the strength and motivation to keep pushing forward.

David Jordan Jr:  As a person that has always been stylish and fashion forward, what inspired VCTRY Clothing?

Layne Harper: Back when I was doing music, I was sponsored by Puma and my closet was full of their gear. Eventually, I felt like I should be wearing my own clothes because it felt more personal and authentic. I even filmed a commercial in Times Square for VCTRY and had my sons on a billboard of 42nd & Broadway. It was another way of showing that everything I do is for my family and putting my sons out into the world so they can see they can achieve anything they set their minds to, just like I have. Right now, I’ve put VCTRY on hold because I’m so busy with acting, but when I return, I want to be fully committed to serving both new and existing customers.

David Jordan Jr:  What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received that has enabled you to always go forward in life?

Layne Harper: The best piece of advice I’ve ever received was actually advice I gave to myself: “Count your blessings, not your dollars.” I truly believe in that. We spend so much time focusing on what we don’t have instead of being thankful for what we do. Money, cars, and luxury items can bring temporary happiness, but none of it lasts forever. The simplest way to start counting your blessings is to be grateful you woke up this morning and keep pushing forward from there. I’ve lost a lot of people along this journey called life, and it humbled me. It’s a reminder that nothing is forever. It’s about leaving your mark on the world while you’re here.”

David Jordan Jr: Upcoming Projects?

Layne Harper: I will say this… a lot of NDAs have been signed for film and television, so you ’ll be seeing my face and hearing my name more often. I trust that God is in control of my life, and what’s meant to be shared with the world will be revealed in due time.
